Location research

This is a picture of the potential location for the first scene. There seems to be no problems here except that there are numerous houses in the background that looks so modern. If we shot it from the other side of the field then it should be fine for the first scene.

Before we started filming i went to take some picture of the potential locations that we had decided on.

If we did shot from the other side then this house would be in the shot. I am going to ask the people who own the house if they mind their house being put in a shot because the house does look authentic and would fit in with the theme.

For the second scene this location is perfect. Nothing here is too modern and will look really effective in our production.

This is the other side of the picture above and the location one of the girls will end up in when they walk through that tunnel of trees. This also is a perfect location and will look great when both girls are in this narrow location.

Costumes

This costume is for the character of Cousin Kate. The plain white blouse again just shows a normal attire for women in those days. The colour blue i think of as quite rich and this is what this costume is meant to show. The blue skirt is fashioned to look expensive and the the blue wrap to match shows that the character is rich as she does have a scarf which were thought of as a luxury in those days.

This is the costume for the character of the cottage maiden. The white shirt is of the period and is just basically a normal blouse. the brown skirt shows how she is in a lower class as the colour brown is associated with dirt and therefor gives the audience a lower opinion of her. The waistcoat/corset fitted found the torso and shoulders to create a top effect. This works well because it is also brown which show lower class. however it does have green in it which could be perceived as her liking the outdoors and as it says in the poem "i was a cottage maiden hardened by sun and air" this shows that she is an outdoor person.

This is the costume for the little Kate. the white symbolises a purity theme throughout the girl which is really important at the symbolism will be brought across in the shots.

The dress is prettier than the other little girls dress to show that she at this point is slightly wealthier and therefore sets the theme of the play.

This is the costume that was given to the part of the little cottage maiden. we wanted to give a look of quality out also a poorer edge, hence the pinny fore.

The importance of the dress being white is that it symbolises purity in the piece creating a fresh mindset. when we see the girls later in life they are wearing colour which shows how their purity has left them.

Research - Pride and Prejudice

In preparation to filming our piece i looked at the film Pride and Prejudice staring Keira Knightley. To start the film a nice scenic shot of a sun rise is shown and the break of early morning. I think this shot looks really effective and gives a clear understanding that the film is beginning just like the day is which is a cleaver yet simplistic way of starting the film. The titles just appear central on the screen over the top of the landscape shot and are in normal font and plain white writing. I think here the producer could have thought of a more effective way to produce the titles as they are nothing special but it does get the point across to an audience what it is trying to convey. To show the main character (Elizabeth Bennet) we have a shot of her walking through the field of where the action has already taken place. This is a nice shot because it is merging the different aspects together. The titles continue to show but in a very minimalistic way as we only see about 3 titles without any mention of characters names. This is odd because Keira Knightley is a big star and not to have a title with her name on is very different to usual, although she is the first person seen as the titles show so i suppose you don't need a title as she is so recognisable. After this we follow Elizabeth Bennet (Knightley) on the way to her house displaying a range of shots. Right from the beginning a piano piece is heard and later when the character we have been following gets home the sound transfers to her sister playing the piano. This is a very cleaver way of showing this as we can then see a clear connection and it also gives us an insight into a character. The costumes are of the period and fit in well with the scene and the setting of the big manor house works really well as we can draw conclusions from the characters. I really like the opening to this film because it is done so simply and it works effectively although i think they could have explored a little more with the titles.

Casting

Bradley was casting coordinator and arranged a time when we could audition people at his house. We auditioned four girls, to take on the roles of Cousin Kate and the Cottage Maiden. We also auditioned three different girls to take on the roles of the younger versions of the two character, Cousin Kate and the Cottage Maiden. It was important that everybody came at the same time, so we could establish who looked like each other, to make our piece more believable. All applicant were good, but we went with the more experienced people as we thought it would enhance our film quality. The cast list were emailed to all applicants:

Ident Research - Nicole

Paramount's ident has a very magical feel to it by having the stars around the name of the company. When stars are mentioned when talking about films and film production companies we often think that it will either be a very good or high up company or film. This ident gives us the impression that it is a very powerful world wide company, which is very strong and independent, due to the name being on top of a mountain, as if it is a lot higher up than the rest of the film companies i have mentioned with this research.

Miramax Film's ident is one of the most simple idents around. By using a bold white font against a black background makes it eye catching, and lets it stand out to the audience.

the simplicity of this ident could show to some people that the company is not as big and powerful as companies such as 20Th Century Fox.

The font blends into itself which is very simple again.

20Th Century Fox's ident is one of today's most recognisable idents around. The ident looks as if it is a large stone building, with lights shining all around it to create focus on the company and the film that would be watched after showing the ident. Making the name of the company look as though it is a building creates the image that this company is world wide, popular, and very powerful, which should be like the film the audience would watch which would be produced by them.

Pixar Animation Studio's ident is very simple. By using black font against a clear blue background it emphasises the word 'PIXAR' making it more visible. Pixar have a very recognisable logo, which is the lamp that is used to replace the 'I'. When seen in places such as cinema screenings or DVDs. the lamp is animated, to usually bounce up and down. This again makes the ident very recognisable, and a lot of people remember it well, because there are not many like this.

Ident Research - Bradley

DreamWorks ident is a really fantastic way of enforcing the company title. for a start the saying "you've got your head ion the clouds" is said when you completely zone out of are dreaming and i think by putting the clouds on here that's the effect they are going for. The crescent moon with the boy sat on it fishing clearly displays a dream sequence and that you can do anything you want to in your dreams. We know that It is a dream because it is impossible for a Boy to sit on the moon and fish but it really gives a believable feel to the picture and shows an element of magic to the ident. Because the clouds look bigger closer to the screen it makes the audience feel like they are there too and so it looks like they are dreaming. I think the company also want you to believe that the journey of the film you are about to watch is going to be so good it will be like a dream. This ident does come alive and just shows the boy fishing enforcing that magical feel.


Working title films uses a very simple font and image to create their ident. The white background give a simplistic effect and contrasts with the bright blue font and really establishes the words to make them look really bold. The circle surrounding the end of "WORKING" gives difference to the ident and changes it from just being two words. The faded colour on the circle give it the 3D effect and makes it look like it is coming out at us. i think the way they have constructed this ident is clever because it puts the point straight out there with no distractions. I think the ident is good but a little boring and doesn't really intrigue an audience.

The Warner brothers ident looks quite simple but does have depth to it. Firstly the background shows a sky with clouds in, this could be to show how the logo is in a different world, or that it is so important it is in a godly place (high above). The shield shape containing the words displays information about the company. It is very clever because the shape containing the "WB" looks like a shield but also fits the words in as if the shape was moulded to fit them in. the band crossing the logo gives the logo a planet feeling as it looks like a ring surrounding it, this could also tie in with the fact that it is in the sky. across the ring it clearly states the name of the company and by putting "PICTURES" it tells an audience it is a film company. I think it is a really good ident and is cleverly designed to create mass impact.

The Walt Disney logo is based around a film and was created from there. Because Disney's films are about fairy tales the ident had to tie in with it. the picture displays Sleeping Beauty's castle that is placed in Disneyland Theme Parks around the world. the picture took to make the ident comes from the castle in Florida which is a copy of the cartoon castle from the film Sleeping Beauty. in front the text clearly states the name of the company in a handwriting that is very recognisable. the "D" is very recognisable and is known popularly worldwide. The name of the company comes from the founder Walt Disney and so is displayed on the ident. the way they have computer generated the sky to look blue and pink, this works well as it looks like a fairytale. the whole feel of the ident gives a magical feel and really intrigues the audience. For the type of films that Disney produces this ident is perfect and i think it ties in really well with all things connected with Disney.

Mise en Scene

Locations.

i had arranged that when it came to the day of filming that we were able to use the field next to my house. this was for the first part of the production when the girls are young and running through the field. i had also arranged that we could film by some stables for later on in the production and i spoke to the owner of the stables to make sure it was all ok. the other part of the filming was filmed on a public footpath so i made sure that the location was ok to film on before we got everything set.

Actors.

To get actors i went to the year 13 performing arts students to see if any would be able to film. i managed to get 2 girls which is just what we needed and i and sure that they were ok with it all. for the two little girls at the beginning i asked a family friend if they would be ok with their daughters being in the production and she was fine with it. once i had the cast set we needed to look at costume.

Costume.

Because i am in the performing arts business i managed to get hold of some costumes that were of the period for the two older girls. i got a blue skirt that covered the ankles and was a bit rouched to give the essence of wealth. then for the other girl i got a brown skirt and a little jacket like a waistcoat to show a more poorer life style. both girls wore white frilly shirts one supplied by me ands the other girl supplied her own. for the two younger girls i got some of my sisters old dresses that were bridesmaid dresses. one was ok for the period but one was a bit too modern so i got a white pinifore to go over the dress. Most of the costumes were accessorised with half aprons wrapped around their waists.

Props.

Nicky for the titles dyed some paper in tea to make it look old so that it could be written on. and i went and bought a fountain pen that we are hopefully going to make it into a quill so it looks of the time. for the production i supplied a sweeping brush for part of the production .

Poem

This is the poem that we are loosely basing our piece on. we think that we are going to have the first 3 stanzas spoken as a voice over, either as the woman narrating it or as the writer Christina Rossetti and show her perspective.

We have no script to our piece apart from the girl who is playing the cottage maiden is going to speak the first three stanzas of the poem and thiss will then give background to the piece.



I was a cottage maiden

Hardened by sun and air,

Contented with my cottage mates,

Not mindful I was fair.

Why did a great lord find me out,

And praise my flaxen hair?

Why did a great lord find me out

To fill my heart with care?

He lured me to his palace home--

Woe's me for joy thereof--
